The Third Week
Sorry about the lack of updates! I will try to get caught up this week.
On the Monday of my third week, I had a meeting with
Dr. Melde. We discussed what material(s) I would make the rover out of, and the
conversation went a bit like this:
Dr. Melde: So do you think you can make a Miura fold pattern
easily now?
Me: Yeah!
Dr. Melde: What about with aluminum?
Me: Uh…sure!
Dr. Melde: Tissue paper?
Me: Uh…
Dr. Melde: Bubble wrap?
The next day, I find this on my desk.
Though Dr. Melde has not said it explicitly yet, I
think this is just an exercise to see what materials cannot be used for the
final device. Materials that do not have the ability to hold a crease (e.g.
tissue paper and bubble wrap) clearly should not be used to complete the Miura
fold. I also have to start considering what dimensions I want this device to
be. Smaller means less instruments on board, but it would also require less
power. I delve into this part of my project in my fourth week. I will get that
post up soon!
